I was walking down the street and I stopped to watch a wasp that was catching a cicada, and I thought that that was pretty magical, but little did I know…
A Mexican man pulled up on his bike to join me in watching the epic cicada takedown and he started telling me story after story of his girlfriend who was a medicine woman who lived in the mountains, delivering babies and healing the sick with folk remedies where there were no hospitals, not even vehicles.
Oh how many dangers she saved him from by alerting him to their presence — the tarantulas that were big as dogs, the leeches that were big as snakes, the snakes that were bigger than trees that she could detect from smell alone. He was just a young man, he didn’t know what he didn’t know.
I think he was telling me that the goddess gives life, and also takes it away. She is savage, and also kind if you listen to her.
Glory be to the goddess.
